Acupuncture did not significantly speed recovery for acute low back pain (ALBP) in this trial. Patients receiving acupuncture alongside standard care showed no statistically significant improvement in recovery time compared to standard care alone.
Area of Science:
- Integrative Medicine
- Pain Management
- Clinical Trials
Background:
- Acute low back pain (ALBP) is a common condition with significant impact on daily life.
- Standard treatment for ALBP often involves conservative measures.
- The role of acupuncture as an adjunct therapy for ALBP requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of a single acupuncture session added to standard treatment for ALBP.
- To determine if acupuncture reduces recovery time in patients with acute low back pain.
Main Methods:
- A multicentre, randomised, controlled trial involving 167 adults with ALBP.
- Participants received either standard care or standard care plus one session of Western medical acupuncture.
- The primary outcome measured was the median days to recovery.
Main Results:
- The median recovery time was 14 days for the control group and 9 days for the acupuncture group (p=0.089).
- No statistically significant difference in recovery time was observed between the groups.
- No serious adverse effects were reported during the trial.
Conclusions:
- A single session of acupuncture, when added to standard treatment, did not lead to a statistically significant reduction in recovery time for acute low back pain.
- Further research may be needed to explore different acupuncture protocols or patient populations for ALBP.
