Imaging Biological Samples with Optical Microscopy01:18

Imaging Biological Samples with Optical Microscopy

8.5K
Optical microscopy uses optic principles to provide detailed images of samples. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek designed the first compound optical microscope in the 17th century to visualize blood cells, bacteria, and yeast cells. In 1830, Joseph Jackson Lister created an essentially modern light microscope. The 20th century saw the development of microscopes with enhanced magnification and resolution.
In optical microscopy, the specimen to be viewed is placed on a glass slide and clipped on the stage...

Computed Tomography01:10

Computed Tomography

7.8K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Summary

Two swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) biometers showed good agreement in cataract patient measurements. However, minor offsets in anterior chamber depth and lens thickness mean these devices should not be used interchangeably.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Devices
  • Biometry

Background:

  • Accurate biometry is crucial for intraocular lens (IOL) calculations in cataract surgery.
  • Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) offers advanced biometry capabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the performance of two SS-OCT biometers: IOLMaster 700 (biometer A) and ANTERION (biometer B).
  • To evaluate agreement in key biometric parameters between the two devices.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study reviewed biometric measurements of 389 eyes from 209 cataract patients.
  • Measurements for keratometry, central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), and axial length (AL) were compared between biometer A and biometer B.
  • Patients were measured with both SS-OCT devices on the same day.

Main Results:

  • Both devices demonstrated good agreement for most parameters, including keratometry and axial length (AL).
  • Mean absolute differences were minimal: 0.04 mm for keratometry, 0.07 mm for ACD and LT, and 0.02 mm for AL.
  • Statistically significant differences (P < .0001) were noted for keratometry and AL, despite small absolute differences.

Conclusions:

  • The two SS-OCT biometers exhibit good agreement in biometric measurements.
  • A minor offset was observed for anterior chamber depth (ACD) and lens thickness (LT) measurements.
  • Despite high agreement, the devices should not be used interchangeably for cataract surgery planning.
