Factors Influencing Attraction VI: Personality Traits

136
Personality traits are fundamental in shaping social perception and influencing interpersonal relationships. Certain traits, such as agreeableness and extraversion, contribute positively to social interactions, whereas others, such as narcissism, have complex and often contradictory effects on how individuals are perceived over time. The Role of Agreeableness and ExtraversionAgreeableness and extraversion are associated with higher levels of interpersonal attractiveness and likability.

Dark Triad and Person Perception

156
Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et...

Personality Disorders: Narcissistic and Avoidant

484
Narcissistic and avoidant personality traits represent two contrasting patterns of behavior that significantly influence social interactions and self-perception. While individuals with narcissistic disorder seek admiration and validation, individuals with avoidant personality disorder withdraw due to fear of judgment.
Characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Narcissistic individuals exhibit an inflated sense of self-importance and an excessive need for admiration. They are often...

Facial Feedback Hypothesis

444
Charles Darwin proposed that facial expressions are an evolutionary adaptation for communication. He argued that these expressions are not influenced by culture but are universal across species. For example, a snarling expression with exposed teeth signals a threat in many animals, including humans. Darwin also suggested that displaying an emotion can intensify the feeling. Smiling, for example, could enhance one's sense of happiness. This idea laid the foundation for understanding the role...

Empathy02:34

Empathy

Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Prosopagnosia01:24

Prosopagnosia

585
Prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, is the inability to recognize faces. In severe cases, individuals with prosopagnosia may not recognize close family members, including parents and spouses, by their faces. For instance, someone with prosopagnosia might walk past their child in a crowd, only realizing their mistake upon noticing their child's distinctive backpack or favorite jacket. Prosopagnosia specifically impairs facial recognition, while the recognition of other objects or...

Summary

This study reveals how narcissism influences early face processing. Individuals high in narcissistic admiration or low in rivalry show distinct brain responses (P1 and N170 event-related potentials) to their own face compared to others.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Social Psychology

Background:

  • Narcissistic individuals exhibit grandiose self-perceptions and altered social evaluations.
  • Previous research relied on behavioral data, leaving neural correlates of perceptual processes in narcissism underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neural correlates of visual face processing in narcissism.
  • To examine variations in event-related potential (ERP) components (P1 and N170) related to narcissism dimensions.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-nine participants completed the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire.
  • Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants viewed images of their own face, a celebrity's face, and a stranger's face.
  • Multilevel models analyzed variations in P1 and N170 amplitudes with narcissism dimensions.

Main Results:

  • Narcissism dimensions significantly moderated P1 and N170 amplitudes.
  • High Admiration or low Rivalry scores correlated with reduced P1 amplitude when viewing one's own face versus a celebrity's.
  • Higher Rivalry scores were associated with a larger N170 amplitude difference between self and stranger faces.

Conclusions:

  • This study provides the first evidence linking narcissism dimensions to early face processing ERPs (P1 and N170).
  • Findings suggest that narcissism influences attentional selection, expectancy-driven perception, and defensive system activation during face perception.
  • Integrating self-report measures with ERPs offers a deeper understanding of self- and other-perception in narcissistic individuals.
