Pharmacogenetics can help Brazilian nurses reduce adverse drug reactions. Genetic variations in CYP2C9 influence drug metabolism, and this study found a link between these variations and adverse effects, supporting its clinical use.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacogenomics
- Clinical Nursing
- Drug Metabolism
Background:
- CYP2C9 enzyme metabolizes many common drugs.
- Genetic variations (polymorphisms) in CYP2C9 can alter drug efficacy and safety.
- Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are a significant concern in patient care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the potential for pharmacogenetics in Brazilian nursing practice.
- To assess the prevalence of CYP2C9 polymorphisms and their association with ADRs.
Main Methods:
- Quantitative, cross-sectional study of 67 healthy individuals with a history of drug use and ADRs.
- DNA extraction from blood samples for genotyping of CYP2C9*2 and CYP2C9*3 polymorphisms using real-time PCR (Taqman assays).
Main Results:
- Over 75% of participants used 2-4 drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
- 19 symptomatic ADRs were reported related to CYP2C9-metabolized drugs.
- CYP2C9*2 and *3 allele frequencies were 11.1% and 7.5%, respectively, with a correlation between low enzyme activity alleles and ADR occurrence.
Conclusions:
- Evidence supports the adoption of pharmacogenetics in nursing care.
- Implementing pharmacogenetics can help minimize ADRs associated with CYP2C9-metabolized medications.
