Background:

Disability assessment forms (DAFs) are a routine physician task often unaddressed in residency.
Residents lack training, face time constraints, and fear impacting the doctor-patient relationship when conducting functional assessments.
A curricular intervention was developed to train residents in focused functional capacity assessments.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe a curriculum designed to prepare residents for completing functional capacity assessments.
To evaluate the effectiveness of this training intervention on resident knowledge and skills.

Main Methods:

Curriculum development involved literature review, needs assessment interviews, and review of existing materials.
Instructional strategies included lectures, panel discussions, and demonstrations.
Learner evaluation used knowledge tests, direct observation, and expert panel reviews over four pilot tests.

Main Results:

Residents showed significant improvement in knowledge scores regarding disability programs and work capacity levels.
All residents could perform the assessment, but confidence in completing DAFs within a 30-minute visit remained low, as anticipated.
Knowledge of federal and state disability programs and differentiating work capacities improved.

Conclusions:

Family and internal medicine residents can acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for functional capacity assessments.
With practice, residents can achieve proficiency in completing DAFs within standard office visit times.
Residency programs should integrate functional assessment training into their curricula.
