This study validates a new simulation model for cerebrospinal fluid leak repair, proving it effectively teaches skull base reconstruction skills. The model is realistic and valuable for surgical training courses.
Area of Science:
- Neurosurgery
- Surgical Simulation
- Medical Education
Background:
- Cerebrospinal fluid leak (CSFL) repair simulation models are scarce.
- Such models are valuable tools for skull base reconstruction surgery training.
Purpose of the Study:
- Assess the face, content, and construct validity of a CSFL repair simulation model.
- Evaluate the model's efficacy in training surgical residents and experts.
Main Methods:
- Eight novices and eight experts performed skull base reconstruction on cadaveric heads.
- Participants' performances were scored using the Global Rating Scale of Operative Performance (GRSOP) and a Specific Skull Base Reconstruction Checklist (SBRC).
- Experts completed a questionnaire to assess face and content validity.
Main Results:
- Expert questionnaire responses indicated high face and content validity (4.13-4.88/5).
- High internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's Alpha: 0.913) and intraclass correlation (0.941) were observed.
- Statistically significant differences in construct validity were found between novices and experts (P < 0.001).
Conclusions:
- The CSFL repair simulation model demonstrated face, content, and construct validity.
- The model effectively facilitates the acquisition of technical skills for skull base reconstruction.
- Realistic features make the model a valuable tool for surgical education and training courses.
