Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

3.6K
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Targeted Cancer Therapies02:57

Targeted Cancer Therapies

8.5K
The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.
There are several types of targeted therapies against...

Summary

Clear cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses (CCS) is a rare cancer. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) completely eliminated a patient's foot tumor without harming surrounding tissue, showing BNCT's potential for CCS treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiotherapy
  • Sarcoma Research

Background:

  • Clear cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses (CCS) is a rare malignancy primarily affecting lower extremities.
  • Current treatment for CCS relies mainly on wide surgical resection, often with limited success.
  • There is a critical need for novel and effective therapeutic strategies for CCS.

Observation:

  • A case study involved a 54-year-old woman with primary CCS in the peroneal tendon of her right foot.
  • The patient was treated with Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT).
  • Tumor monitoring revealed complete disappearance of the mass following BNCT.

Findings:

  • BNCT demonstrated complete local control of the clear cell sarcoma.
  • The treatment showed no observable damage to adjacent healthy tissues.
  • This represents the first documented instance of BNCT efficacy in managing CCS.

Implications:

  • Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) shows significant potential as a treatment for clear cell sarcoma.
  • BNCT may offer a less invasive and more effective alternative to surgery for CCS.
  • Further research into BNCT for rare sarcomas is warranted to establish its broader clinical utility.
