Long-term Potentiation01:35

Long-term Potentiation

57.6K
Long-term potentiation, or LTP, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTP is the process of synaptic strengthening that occurs over time between pre- and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic strengthening of LTP works in opposition to the synaptic weakening of long-term depression (LTD) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Humanistic Therapy01:24

Humanistic Therapy

246
Humanistic therapies emphasize personal growth, self-understanding, and the fulfillment of human potential. Rooted in the belief that individuals inherently strive toward self-actualization, these approaches encourage clients to explore their feelings and experiences in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Humanistic therapies differ from psychodynamic approaches by focusing on conscious experiences, present circumstances, and the potential for self-improvement rather than past conflicts...

Purposive Learning

331
E. C. Tolman emphasized the purposiveness of behavior — the idea that much of our behavior is goal-directed. For instance, employees who aim for a promotion work diligently to meet their targets. Tolman argued that when classical conditioning and operant conditioning occur, the organism acquires certain expectations. In classical conditioning, a child might fear a dog because they expect it to bite. In operant conditioning, a person might consistently work overtime because they expect a...

Psychodynamic Therapy01:29

Psychodynamic Therapy

344
Psychodynamic therapies emphasize the exploration of unconscious processes and early childhood experiences as fundamental contributors to psychological difficulties. These therapies, deeply rooted in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, aim to uncover and resolve unconscious conflicts, granting individuals insights that promote emotional and behavioral healing. Contemporary psychodynamic approaches have evolved, integrating a broader range of influences and methodologies while still valuing the...

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

288
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Summary

A new scale, the Jefferson Scale of Physical Therapist Lifelong Learning (JSPTLL), was developed to measure lifelong learning in physical therapists. Higher JSPTLL scores correlated with greater career satisfaction and commitment to lifelong learning.

Area of Science:

  • Health Professions Education
  • Physical Therapy Research
  • Lifelong Learning Assessment

Background:

  • Maintaining current knowledge and skills is crucial for allied health professionals.
  • Lifelong learning is emphasized in physical therapy, but a valid assessment tool was lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Jefferson Scale of Physical Therapist Lifelong Learning (JSPTLL).
  • To assess lifelong learning aptitude and beliefs among physical therapists.

Main Methods:

  • Adapted the Jefferson Scale of Physician Lifelong Learning to create the JSPTLL.
  • Conducted a national survey of physical therapists using state licensure board mailing lists.

Main Results:

  • The JSPTLL demonstrated a mean score of 55.13 (SD 7.4) in 540 respondents.
  • Strong correlation found between JSPTLL scores and commitment to lifelong learning (rs=0.51).
  • Moderate correlation observed between JSPTLL scores and career satisfaction (rs=0.32).

Conclusions:

  • The JSPTLL is a psychometrically sound instrument for evaluating lifelong learning in physical therapists.
  • Further research may explore its applicability in other health professions.
