Medical students experience high burnout rates due to demanding curricula. This study found significant emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low accomplishment, linked to workload and work-life factors.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Psychology
- Student Health
Background:
- Limited research exists on medical student burnout.
- Paracelsus Private Medical University (PMU) has an accelerated 5-year program, increasing student stress.
- High workload and tight schedules are characteristic of the PMU program.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess burnout symptoms in PMU medical students.
- To compare student burnout levels with Austrian norms.
- To identify factors contributing to burnout in this specific medical program.
Main Methods:
- Three surveys conducted over an academic year (December 2009, June 2010, December 2010).
- Utilized the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) assessing emotional exhaustion, depersonalization/cynicism, and personal accomplishment.
- Employed the Six Factors Theory of Burnout framework and compared results with Austrian norms.
Main Results:
- PMU students showed significantly higher emotional exhaustion, depersonalization/cynicism, and lower personal accomplishment than norms.
- Work-life factors indicated high workload, external control, low reward, and poor community/fairness, except for motivation.
- Overall burnout frequency was 47.8%, with higher rates in females, older students, and peaking mid-academic term.
Conclusions:
- Burnout is prevalent among medical students, particularly in accelerated programs.
- Heavy workload and adverse work-life factors are strongly associated with student burnout.
- Curricular and organizational adjustments are necessary to mitigate burnout in medical education.
