Summary

Lethal donkey bites are extremely rare, but a case involving a toddler highlights the potential danger. This incident underscores the need for vigilance around farm animals, even those considered docile.

Background:

Animal-inflicted injuries represent a significant global public health concern.
While common domestic animals can cause harm, severe or fatal injuries from donkeys are exceptionally uncommon in medical literature.

Observation:

A 21-month-old child was discovered deceased in a farmyard adjacent to a family-owned donkey.
Autopsy revealed distinct bite marks on the victim's neck and upper shoulder region.

Findings:

The fatal injuries were consistent with severe cervical trauma and spinal cord damage.
The donkey attack was identified as the direct cause of death.

Implications:

This case highlights the potential for severe, even fatal, injuries from donkeys, particularly in vulnerable populations like young children.
It emphasizes the importance of understanding and mitigating risks associated with all domestic animals in agricultural and domestic settings.
Further research into the biomechanics of donkey bites and preventative strategies may be warranted.
