Therapeutic Communication01:30

Therapeutic Communication

6.7K
Communication is a lifelong learning process. Through therapeutic communication, nurses can collect relevant assessment data, provide education and counseling, and interact during nursing interventions. Sending and receiving messages occur through verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and can happen separately or simultaneously.
Verbal communication depends on language or a prescribed way of using words so that people can share information effectively. The critical aspects of verbal...

SBAR II: Application of SBAR

5.5K
SBAR is an effective communication tool used by healthcare professionals to communicate patient information accurately. SBAR stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation. For a better understanding, an example is given below.
SBAR Report from a Nurse to a Health Care Provider
S: "Hello, Dr. Smith. This is Jane, RN, from the Med Surg unit. I am calling to tell you about Ms. White in Room 210, who is experiencing increased pain and redness at her incision site. Her recent...

Barriers to Effective Communication II01:21

Barriers to Effective Communication II

4.4K
The barriers to effective communication also include cultural barriers, semantic barriers, gender barriers, and time constraints.
Cultural barriers:
Differences in values, beliefs, religion, knowledge, and tradition can significantly impact communication. Awareness of nonverbal cues is critical, especially when conversing with a patient from a different culture. What appears appropriate in one culture may be inappropriate in another.
Semantic barriers:
As a result of their tendency to use...

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation III: AED Use

336
Introduction to AEDAn Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable medical device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electrical shock to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, leading to a loss of blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. In such emergencies, time is of the essence, and using an AED, combined with Cardiopulmonary...

Applications of GIS: Disaster Management and Emergency Response

327
Geographic Information System (GIS) technology is essential for risk identification, action prioritization, and resource optimization in critical situations like flooding and earthquakes. By integrating spatial and demographic data, GIS provides a comprehensive framework for emergency response.GIS integrates data layers, like rainfall intensity, topography, elevation profiles, and river levels, to model high-risk flood zones. These layers assess areas susceptible to flooding based on their...

Communication01:03

Communication

8.3K
Communication between two animals occurs when one animal transmits an information signal that causes a change in the animal that receives the information. Organisms communicate with one another in a host of different ways. Signals can be auditory, chemical, visual, tactile, or a combination of these. Communication is a critical behavioral adaptation that promotes survival, growth, and reproduction.

Summary

Remote Advanced Communication Training (Re-ACT) effectively trained more clinicians in serious illness conversations (SICs) during COVID-19. While cost-effective, Re-ACT reduced skill practice compared to in-person training.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Quality Improvement
  • Healthcare Communication

Background:

  • A quality improvement framework was used to adapt a two-day, in-person Advanced Communication Training (ACT) course into a remote format (Re-ACT).
  • The goal was to enhance clinicians' serious illness conversation (SIC) skills, particularly relevant during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) crisis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the reach, impact, and costs of the remote ACT (Re-ACT) training.
  • To compare these measures against traditional in-person ACT courses.

Main Methods:

  • Re-ACT involved 45-60 minute synchronous, remote sessions. Sessions included a didactic introduction to SIC skills and a live demonstration using patient-actors.
  • The study evaluated reach, impact (clinician preparedness), and costs, comparing Re-ACT to in-person ACT.

Main Results:

  • Re-ACT reached more clinicians in less time than in-person ACT.
  • While well-received, Re-ACT resulted in decreased content depth and skill practice opportunities.
  • Clinicians trained via Re-ACT reported feeling less prepared for SICs compared to those in ACT.

Conclusions:

  • Remote ACT (Re-ACT) provided effective and well-received serious illness conversation (SIC) training during a crisis.
  • Re-ACT demonstrated significant cost savings compared to in-person ACT.
  • Further research is needed to determine the optimal blend of remote and in-person training for SIC skills.
