Background:

Adolescent depression is a significant mental health concern.
Understanding the neural underpinnings of adolescent depression is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.
Current diagnostic methods may benefit from objective biomarkers.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate alterations in brain function in adolescent depression.
To explore the utility of support vector machine (SVM) for clinical differential diagnosis.
To identify potential neuroimaging markers for adolescent depression.

Main Methods:

Recruited 24 adolescent patients with depression and 23 healthy controls.
Acquired 3D T1 and resting-state functional MRI data.
Analyzed regional homogeneity (ReHo) using SPM 12 and REST 1.8; applied SVM for classification.

Main Results:

Adolescent depression showed increased ReHo in the lingual gyrus, middle occipital gyrus, postcentral gyrus, and precentral gyrus.
Decreased ReHo was observed in the vermis compared to controls.
The SVM model achieved good classification performance (AUC = 0.778) for adolescent depression.

Conclusions:

Altered spontaneous neural activity in specific brain regions is implicated in adolescent depression.
These ReHo changes may contribute to the neuropathological mechanisms of the condition.
Neuroimaging markers, like ReHo, show potential for clinical evaluation and differential diagnosis of adolescent depression.
