1Department of Conservative Dentistry, School of Dentistry, The University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan.
Dental students appreciated a comprehensive care model, which improved their clinical skills and confidence. This educational approach enhanced self-learning and reasoning, suggesting its broader application in dental education.
Area of Science:
- Dental Education
- Conservative Dentistry
- Medical Pedagogy
Background:
- Holistic methodology in education is increasingly adopted in dental schools.
- Conservative dentistry department transitioned from a requirement-based to a comprehensive care treatment model.
- This shift aimed to integrate a more holistic educational approach.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate dental students' confidence levels regarding the comprehensive care model.
- To assess students' perspectives on the benefits and challenges of this new teaching model.
- To compare student confidence in supervised tasks versus independent comprehensive patient care.
Main Methods:
- A questionnaire survey was administered to dental students at the end of the 2018-2019 academic year.
- The survey investigated student opinions on the benefits, difficulties, and shortcomings of the comprehensive care model.
- Self-perceived confidence was measured for supervised tasks and comprehensive patient management.
Main Results:
- A 63% response rate (127/202 students) was achieved.
- Most students felt the comprehensive model improved patient care, satisfaction, self-confidence, clinical technique exposure, and analytical skills.
- Student confidence remained lower in comprehensive patient management compared to supervised tasks.
Conclusions:
- Dental students generally appreciated the comprehensive care educational model.
- The model enhanced students' self-learning and didactic skills.
- Adapting this methodology to earlier academic years and other disciplines could improve educational effectiveness and learning outcomes.
