Abstract:
Recent studies have revealed that family functioning affects diabetic control, compliance behavior, and treatment of obesity, all of which are issues important to the care of the NIDDM patient. By assessing a few important family dynamics and intervening where appropriate, primary care physicians cannot only improve family functioning, but the health of their patients as well. Family therapy may be necessary when families are resistant to practitioner interventions.
