Summary

Adult pet ownership increases pet sensitization risk. However, pet ownership is not linked to atopic disorders, except for adult atopic dermatitis with cat ownership.

Background:

  • The relationship between pet ownership and pet sensitization is not well-defined.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between pet sensitization and pet ownership stratified by age.
  • To determine if pet ownership influences the development of allergic conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 1,957 patients with nasal symptoms, including skin-prick tests and questionnaires.
  • Patients were categorized into adults (>19 years) and children (≤19 years).
  • Statistical analysis evaluated the association between pet ownership and sensitization in both age groups.

Main Results:

  • In adults, dog and cat sensitization were significantly associated with respective pet ownership (aORs 3.881 and 10.804).
  • No significant association was found between pet ownership and sensitization in children.
  • Adult cat ownership was linked to atopic dermatitis (aOR 4.840), but pet ownership generally did not correlate with allergic rhinitis or asthma.

Conclusions:

  • Pet ownership in adulthood is a risk factor for developing pet sensitization.
  • Pet ownership is not associated with most atopic disorders, with the exception of adult atopic dermatitis linked to cat ownership.
