Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing stops intermittently during sleep, often leading to significant health issues. Each episode can last from 10 to 20 seconds or more and is frequently accompanied by a brief arousal from sleep. Summary

Central sleep apnea (CSA) is uncommon after ischemic stroke. This study found only 1.4% of patients met CSA criteria, with males and non-obese individuals being more affected.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of central sleep apnea (CSA) in patients following ischemic stroke.
  • To identify clinical correlates associated with CSA in this population.

Main Methods:

  • 1346 ischemic stroke patients from the BASIC project underwent home sleep apnea testing.
  • Central sleep apnea (CSA) was defined by a central apnea index (CAI) ≥5/hour with ≥50% central events.
  • Demographics and comorbidities were collected from medical records.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of central sleep apnea (CSA) was 1.4% (19 participants).
  • Participants with CSA were more likely to be male.
  • Lower prevalence of obesity was observed in patients with CSA compared to those without.

Conclusions:

  • Central sleep apnea (CSA) is uncommon in patients with recent ischemic stroke.
  • No association was found between CSA and other comorbidities in this cohort.
