Background:

The COVID-19 pandemic forced many software developers to work from home rapidly.
This transition occurred under stressful and challenging conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the impact of the pandemic on software developers' wellbeing and productivity.
To identify factors influencing these outcomes and explore differential effects.

Main Methods:

A multilingual questionnaire survey using validated scales was administered.
Data from 2225 respondents across 53 countries were analyzed using non-parametric statistics and structural equation modeling.

Main Results:

The pandemic negatively affected developer wellbeing and productivity, which are closely interrelated.
Disaster preparedness, pandemic-related fear, and home office ergonomics were significant factors.
Women, parents, and individuals with disabilities may have been disproportionately affected.

Conclusions:

Software companies should enhance employee wellbeing and home office ergonomics to boost productivity.
Targeted support is crucial for vulnerable groups, including women, parents, and disabled employees.
