    Summary

    While excess macronutrients may stimulate cancer, certain micronutrients like vitamins and minerals show promise for cancer prevention. More research is needed for many micronutrients to confirm their anticancer effects.

    Background:

    • Literature review of existing epidemiologic and animal laboratory data.
    • Analysis of studies focusing on macronutrients, micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, lipotropes), and non-nutrients (dietary fiber).

    Main Results:

    • Vitamins A, E, C, and selenium show significant anticancer effects, primarily in animal models.
    • Folic acid, manganese, molybdenum, copper, phenylalanine, methionine, and choline have minimal data suggesting potential cancer incidence reduction.
    • Data for zinc and B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B12, pantothenic acid) are limited and sometimes contradictory.

    Conclusions:

    • Well-studied micronutrients like Vitamins A, E, C, and selenium demonstrate anticancer potential.

    • Current data are insufficient to recommend specific micronutrient supplementation for cancer prevention for many nutrients.
