Computed Tomography01:10

Computed Tomography

7.7K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging Physics
  • Radiation Dosimetry

Background:

  • Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) offers lower radiation doses than medical CT.
  • The Carestream CS9600 CBCT utilizes higher x-ray tube voltage (120 kVp) and added filtration.
  • Independent dosimetry is crucial for verifying radiation safety guidelines.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To independently evaluate the radiation dose performance of the Carestream CS9600 CBCT.
  • To assess dose parameters across various field of view, exposure settings, and filtration options.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a thimble ionization chamber and PMMA phantom.
  • Employed the SEDENTEXTCT evaluation method to characterize dose index.

Main Results:

  • Radiation dose index measures ranged from 0.128 to 13.848 mGy.
  • Field of view, filter type, and phantom size influenced dose index and manufacturer-reported dose area product.

Conclusions:

  • A strong linear correlation exists between experimental dose index and manufacturer dose area product.
  • The 0.7 mm Cu filter significantly reduced dose index at 120 kVp compared to a 0.15 mm Cu filter at 90 kVp.
