Primary ureteral hemangiosarcoma is a rare canine cancer. This case report details a goldendoodle with this rare tumor, highlighting the need for its consideration in diagnosing ureteral masses.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Oncology
  • Comparative Pathology
  • Canine Neoplasia

Background:

  • Primary ureteral neoplasia in dogs is exceptionally rare.
  • This case report documents the second known instance of primary ureteral hemangiosarcoma in a dog.
  • Focuses on the clinical and pathological aspects of a primary distal ureteral hemangiosarcoma.

Observation:

  • A 12-year-old spayed female goldendoodle presented with polyuria and weight loss.
  • Diagnostic imaging revealed a left distal ureteral mass with secondary hydroureter and a separate left hepatic mass.
  • Surgical intervention included left ureteronephrectomy, partial cystectomy, and liver lobectomy.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed primary ureteral hemangiosarcoma and concurrent hepatocellular carcinoma.

  • The ureteral mass was identified as a hemangiosarcoma.
  • The hepatic mass was diagnosed as hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • Implications:

    • Ureteral hemangiosarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis for canine ureteral masses due to its rarity.
    • The prognosis for ureteral hemangiosarcoma is suspected to be poor.
    • Routine monitoring and consideration of adjunctive therapies are recommended for canine ureteral hemangiosarcoma.
