Summary

This study identifies optimal electroencephalogram (EEG) features for automatic epileptic seizure detection. Similarity/dissimilarity features, particularly the Bhattacharyya-based dissimilarity index (BBDI), show high accuracy in distinguishing seizure states.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate recently proposed EEG-based features for optimal selection in reliable seizure detection systems.
  • To identify features that effectively differentiate between ictal, pre-ictal, and post-ictal states in epilepsy patients.

  • Extracted time, frequency, phase space, and similarity/dissimilarity features from intracranial EEG signals during pre-surgical monitoring.

Conclusions:

  • Similarity/dissimilarity indices, especially BBDI, are highly effective for automatic epileptic seizure detection.
  • The proposed features are suitable for developing reliable seizure detection systems for drug-resistant focal epilepsy.
  • Feature performance is consistent across channels within and outside the seizure-onset zone.
