Modified zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) root canal sealer with petasin extract demonstrated reduced setting time and cytotoxicity. This enhanced ZOE formulation also exhibited improved anti-inflammatory properties, making it a promising alternative for endodontic treatments.
Area of Science:
- Dental Materials Science
- Endodontics
- Biomaterials
Background:
- Zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) is a widely used root canal sealer.
- ZOE exhibits drawbacks including cytotoxicity, solubility, and periapical tissue irritation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effects of incorporating petasin extract into ZOE sealer.
- Investigate modifications in setting time, solubility, cytotoxicity, and anti-inflammatory action.
Main Methods:
- Setting time assessed using Vicat's apparatus.
- Solubility tested per ADA specification #8.
- Cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory effects evaluated using MTT assay and protein denaturation assay on L929 cell lines.
Main Results:
- The 5:1 ratio of ZOE with petasin extract showed the shortest setting times.
- No significant differences in solubility were observed across groups.
- The petasin-modified ZOE exhibited significantly lower cytotoxicity and higher anti-inflammatory effects compared to the control.
Conclusions:
- The 5:1 ratio of ZOE and petasin extract offers reduced setting time and cytotoxicity.
- This combination demonstrates superior anti-inflammatory properties compared to unmodified ZOE.
