Extraversion, a personality trait, is positively linked to both cigarette and water-pipe smoking among Iranian adolescents. Further research is needed to understand this relationship over time.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Public Health
- Adolescent Health
Background:
- Limited research exists on the connection between the personality trait of extraversion and various tobacco smoking methods.
- Understanding these associations is crucial for developing targeted public health interventions for adolescents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between extraversion and both cigarette and water-pipe smoking.
- To examine these associations within a representative sample of Iranian high school students.
Main Methods:
- A multistage proportional cluster sampling method was used to select 2,312 tenth-grade students in Tabriz, Iran.
- Participants completed self-administered questionnaires covering smoking habits, extraversion, and demographic information.
- Ordinal logistic regression analysis was employed to analyze the collected data.
Main Results:
- The prevalence of regular cigarette smoking was 4.2%, and water-pipe smoking was 3.5% among the students.
- A positive association was found between extraversion and both cigarette and water-pipe smoking.
- Adjusted odds ratios indicated a significant link between extraversion and the likelihood of engaging in both smoking behaviors.
Conclusions:
- Extraversion appears to be positively associated with cigarette and water-pipe smoking in adolescents.
- Longitudinal studies are recommended to explore the causal effect of extraversion on tobacco smoking progression in this age group.
