Summary

Technetium Tc 99m diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (DTPA) lung scans may help monitor sarcoidosis. Increased DTPA absorption in patients with sarcoidosis may indicate more advanced or severe lung injury.

Background:

  • Sarcoidosis frequently affects the lungs (90% prevalence).
  • Lymphocytes are key in sarcoidosis pathogenesis, but other inflammatory cells also contribute to lung injury.
  • While often benign, sarcoidosis can be relentless, leading to mortality in ~25% of patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the utility of 99m Tc-DTPA lung absorption rates in assessing sarcoidosis severity and course.
  • To determine if altered pulmonary epithelial integrity, indicated by 99m Tc-DTPA absorption, correlates with disease progression.

Main Methods:

  • Measurement of 99m Tc-DTPA absorption rate in the lungs of sarcoidosis patients.
  • Correlation of absorption rates with disease stage and clinical course.
