  • Understanding familial patterns of SGA is crucial for accurate diagnosis and counseling.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the family history of newborns born small for gestational age (SGA).
  • To determine the prevalence and distribution of SGA among parents and parental siblings of SGA infants.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 926 women with a previous SGA infant using a detailed electronic database (2008-2017).
  • Familial history, including birth weights and gestational ages, was collected via questionnaires.
  • SGA defined as birth weight below the 10th percentile; statistical analysis performed using Chi-square test.

Main Results:

  • 51% of SGA infants had at least one other family member born SGA.
  • Maternal SGA occurred in 55% of familial cases, paternal SGA in 28.1%.
  • 22.5% of all SGA infants had an SGA aunt or uncle, with maternal siblings more affected than paternal siblings.

Conclusions:

  • A family history of SGA is prevalent in SGA infants, most commonly in mothers.
  • The higher incidence in maternal siblings suggests a possible genetic component in SGA trait transmission.
