Summary

Parasitic infections, like Toxoplasma gondii, may protect against Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Lower rates of anti-Toxoplasma antibodies in MS patients suggest a potential protective role for these infections in MS development.

Background:

  • The hygiene hypothesis suggests reduced exposure to pathogens may increase autoimmune disease risk.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • Parasitic infections are being investigated for their potential immunomodulatory effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between exposure to *Toxoplasma gondii* and the risk of developing Multiple Sclerosis.
  • To determine if *Toxoplasma gondii* seropositivity influences MS prevalence.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted in Catania, Italy.
  • 129 MS patients and 287 age/sex-matched controls were recruited.
  • Presence of *Toxoplasma gondii* IgG antibodies was assessed using serological analysis.

Main Results:

  • *Toxoplasma gondii* antibodies were less prevalent in MS patients (29.5%) compared to controls (45.4%).
  • An inverse association was observed between *Toxoplasma gondii* seropositivity and MS (adjusted OR = 0.56).
  • High educational level showed an inverse association with *Toxoplasma gondii* seropositivity.

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the hypothesis that parasitic infections may have a protective effect against Multiple Sclerosis.
  • Reduced exposure to parasites like *Toxoplasma gondii* could be a factor in MS development.
  • Further research into the immunomodulatory mechanisms of parasitic infections in MS is warranted.
