Adolescents with prosuicide attitudes often exhibit suicidal behavior. This study found that factors like gender, religiosity, socioeconomic status, depression, and prior suicidal experiences influence these attitudes in youth.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Adolescent Health
- Mental Health Research
Background:
- Previous research indicates a link between prosuicide attitudes and suicidal behavior.
- Understanding adolescents' perspectives on suicide is crucial for prevention efforts.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify the underlying factor structure of adolescent attitudes toward suicide.
- To examine demographic, clinical, and experiential correlates of these attitudes.
Main Methods:
- A questionnaire assessing attitudes toward suicide, demographics, and clinical variables was administered to 1292 middle school students.
- Factor analysis was employed to determine the structure of attitudes toward suicide.
Main Results:
- A four-factor solution emerged for attitudes toward suicide.
- Females, nonreligious individuals, those with lower socioeconomic status, higher depressive symptoms, and a history of suicidal ideation/plans reported more understanding attitudes.
- Depressed adolescents showed more permissive attitudes, viewing suicide as unpreventable and linked to loneliness.
Conclusions:
- Adolescent attitudes toward suicide are associated with sociodemographic factors.
- Depressive symptom severity and personal experiences with suicidality are significant correlates.
- These findings highlight the complex interplay of factors influencing adolescent suicide attitudes.
