Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pulmonology
  • Thoracic Surgery

Background:

  • Chylothorax is a rare but serious complication of lymphoma.
  • Lymphoma-associated chylothorax carries a poor prognosis with limited established treatment options.

Observation:

  • A case of lymphoma with bilateral chylothorax is presented.
  • Despite optimal chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the pleural effusion persisted.

Findings:

  • Pleuroscopy under local anesthesia was performed.
  • Pleural instillation of pure talc resulted in satisfactory immediate outcomes.
  • No recurrence of chylothorax was observed at six months post-procedure.

Implications:

  • Talc pleurodesis is a simple and safe therapeutic option for refractory chylothorax.
  • This approach may improve outcomes for patients with lymphoma-induced chylothorax.
  • Further studies are warranted to confirm the efficacy of talc pleurodesis in managing chylothorax.
