  • A study was conducted on children aged 1 month to 14 years with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection via RT-PCR.
  • Data collected included clinico-epidemiological and laboratory profiles from May 15 to July 31, 2020.

  • Thirty children were included, with a median age of 10.5 years; 60% were boys. Most were from urban, containment zones and lower socioeconomic strata.
  • 70% of pediatric patients were asymptomatic, and all had a positive household contact. Symptomatic cases presented with mild fever, cough, or rhinitis.
  • Laboratory findings showed a mean leucocyte count of 7470 ± 2427, with leucocytosis in 9% and elevated C-reactive protein in 13%. No olfactory or gustatory dysfunction or mortality was reported.

Conclusions:

  • COVID-19 in children is generally a mild illness, with severe acute respiratory infection being uncommon.
  • Documented household contact was a common factor among all infected children in this cohort.
  • The findings underscore the generally benign nature of COVID-19 in the pediatric population.
