Summary
This study shows that autoplastic grafting and tibiotarsal arthrodesis effectively treat distal tibia tumors. Reconstruction using Kuntscher nails or plates yielded good functional outcomes without recurrence in five patients.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Oncology
- Reconstructive Surgery
Background:
- Distal tibia tumors require effective surgical management.
- Autoplastic grafting and tibiotarsal arthrodesis are reconstructive options.
- Fixation methods include Kuntscher nails or plates.
Observation:
- Five cases of distal tibia tumor resection and reconstruction were analyzed.
- Tumors included benign, aggressive pseudotumors (Enneking stage 3), and early-stage malignant tumors (Enneking stage 1A or 2A).
- Surgical reconstruction involved autoplastic grafting and tibiotarsal arthrodesis.
Findings:
- Infection occurred in 2 out of 5 cases but resolved with surgical cleansing.
- All patients achieved good long-term functional results.
- No cases of pseudoarthrosis or tumor recurrence were observed.
Implications:
- Autoplastic grafting and tibiotarsal arthrodesis are viable surgical treatments for specific distal tibia tumors.
- The described surgical techniques offer favorable functional outcomes and low recurrence rates.
- Careful surgical management can mitigate complications like infection.
