Summary

Nurses highly value technical nursing skills but often overlook psychosocial aspects like patient lifestyle exploration. Listening and involving patients in care were not perceived as caring activities in this study.

Background:

Understanding nurses' perceptions of caring is crucial for improving patient experiences.
Previous research indicates a varied interpretation of 'caring' within the nursing profession.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine nurses' perceptions of various caring activities in nursing practice.
To identify which specific nursing actions are considered 'caring' by healthcare professionals.

Main Methods:

A descriptive study design was employed.
260 nurses completed a Turkish translation of the 25-item Caring Dimensions Inventory.
Data were analyzed using Mokken scaling.

Main Results:

Technical nursing activities, such as medication observation and vital sign measurement, were highly endorsed.
Providing patient privacy was the most endorsed item (mean = 4.31).
Exploring patient lifestyle was the least endorsed item (mean = 2.60), and listening/involving patients were not considered caring.

Conclusions:

Nurses' perceptions of caring are heavily weighted towards technical proficiency and privacy.
There is a significant gap in recognizing psychosocial aspects, such as lifestyle, and patient-centered communication as core caring activities.
Further education and interventions may be needed to broaden nurses' understanding of holistic caring in nursing.
