Abstract:
The specific agent causing genital ulceration is difficult to identify without laboratory confirmatory testing including darkfield microscopy, syphilis and lymphogranuloma venereum serology, and culture for Haemophilus ducreyi and herpes simplex virus. Empiric antimicrobial therapy risks masking clinical or serologic diagnosis of syphilis.
