Background:

  • Visual snow (VS) is a debilitating condition characterized by persistent visual disturbances.
  • Brain imaging studies indicate hypermetabolism and altered neuronal excitability in the visual cortex of VS patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate disease-dependent alterations in functional connectivity and gray matter volume (GMV) in brain regions associated with visual perception in VS patients.
  • To explore the relationship between neuroimaging findings and clinical parameters in VS.

Main Methods:

  • Nineteen VS patients and 16 controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess functional connectivity.
  • Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to evaluate gray matter volume (GMV) differences.
  • Correlation analyses examined associations between MRI indices and clinical symptoms.

Main Results:

  • VS patients exhibited increased functional connectivity between extrastriate visual and inferior temporal regions, and between prefrontal and parietal areas.
  • A significant increase in GMV was observed in the right lingual gyrus of VS patients.
  • Symptom duration positively correlated with GMV in both lingual gyri.

Conclusions:

  • Visual snow is associated with both functional and structural brain changes extending beyond the visual system, involving higher visual, temporal, and prefrontal cortices.
  • These alterations impact visual processing, memory, attention, and cognitive control.
  • In vivo neuroimaging biomarkers identified in this study may offer objective outcome measures for VS.
