Handwashing II: Pre-procedure and Initial Procedure Steps

1.3K
The pre-procedure steps of handwashing include removing jewelry and rolling up sleeves. However, many organizations allow staff to wear wedding rings.
The hand washing procedure itself includes the following steps. First, cover cuts, if any, on hands with a waterproof dressing. Cuts and abrasions can become contaminated with bacteria hindering the ability to clean the area thoroughly. In addition, repeated hand washing can worsen an injury.  The nails must be short and clean, without nail...

Implementation is the execution of the nursing care plan developed during the planning phase.
The five steps to implementing effective nursing care include reassessing the patient, reviewing and revising the existing nursing care plan, organizing the resources and care delivery, anticipating and preventing complications, and implementing nursing interventions.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Hygiene Education
  • Online Learning

Background:

  • The University of British Columbia (UBC) has offered an online Dental Hygiene Degree-Completion (DC) program since 2006.
  • Student experiences and support needs in this online format have not been previously investigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the experiences of students transitioning into an online dental hygiene DC program.
  • To identify student support needs within this online learning environment.

Main Methods:

  • An online survey was distributed to 53 currently enrolled students in September 2019.
  • The survey included both open-ended and closed-ended questions.
  • Thirty-two students completed the survey, yielding a 60% response rate.

Main Results:

  • 78% of respondents had no prior online education experience, and 59% lacked confidence navigating web-based environments.
  • While 75% felt part of the Faculty of Dentistry, only 47% felt connected to the broader university.
  • Awareness of support resources varied, with only 41% knowing about resources outside the Faculty.

Conclusions:

  • Findings highlight challenges in online student transition, including lack of experience and varying levels of belonging.
  • Older students and those with prior online experience demonstrated better engagement with support systems.
  • Recommendations are proposed to enhance online student support and transition, applicable across institutions.
