    Infected laparotomy wounds showed increased tensile strength compared to normal wounds, particularly after 14 days. This enhanced wound healing was linked to greater collagen deposition, suggesting a beneficial role for gram-negative bacteria in wound repair.

    Background:

    • Bacterial infections typically impede wound healing.
    • Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are common causes of surgical site infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of deliberate gram-negative bacterial infection on the tensile strength of laparotomy wounds.
    • To explore the histological basis for any observed changes in wound strength.

    Main Methods:

    • Laparotomy wounds in a control group were left uninfected.
    • Experimental wounds were intentionally infected with known inoculums of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
    • Wound tensile strength was measured at various time points (10, 14, and 21 days post-wounding).
