Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

580
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Dark Triad and Person Perception01:29

Dark Triad and Person Perception

116
Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et...

Personality Disorders: Narcissistic and Avoidant

409
Narcissistic and avoidant personality traits represent two contrasting patterns of behavior that significantly influence social interactions and self-perception. While individuals with narcissistic disorder seek admiration and validation, individuals with avoidant personality disorder withdraw due to fear of judgment.
Characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Narcissistic individuals exhibit an inflated sense of self-importance and an excessive need for admiration. They are often...

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.6K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Personality Theory by Eysenck and Eysenck01:29

Personality Theory by Eysenck and Eysenck

874
Hans and Sybil Eysenck developed a widely recognized theory of personality, which emphasizes the role of temperament and genetically based differences in shaping individual traits. Their theory posits that biological factors primarily determine personality and can be understood through two main dimensions: extroversion/introversion and neuroticism/stability.
In the extroversion/introversion dimension, highly extroverted people are sociable, outgoing, and easily connect with others. In contrast,...

Personality Disorders: Dependent and Obsessive-Compulsive

224
Dependent personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder are two separate psychological conditions that influence behavior, relationships, and overall life functioning. Though both involve maladaptive behaviors, their core characteristics and motivations differ significantly.
 Dependent Personality Disorder
Dependent personality disorder is characterized by an excessive reliance on others to manage various aspects of life. Individuals with this disorder often struggle...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

This study reveals that both normal and maladaptive personality traits predict self-reported executive functioning (EF). Maladaptive traits offer unique insights into EF deficits beyond normative traits.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Science

Background:

  • Research on executive functioning (EF) and personality primarily examines normative traits.
  • Limited research exists on the link between maladaptive personality traits and self-reported EF.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between self-reported EF domains and both normative and maladaptive personality traits.
  • To determine if maladaptive personality traits provide unique predictive variance for EF beyond normative traits.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale for self-reported EF.
  • Assessed normative personality using the International Personality Item Pool-NEO-120 Item (IPIP-120).
  • Assessed maladaptive personality using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Short Form (PID-5-SF) in 354 undergraduates.

Main Results:

  • Strongest associations between EF and personality were observed for neuroticism/negative affectivity and conscientiousness/disinhibition.
  • Normative traits explained more variance in EF when considered alone.
  • Maladaptive traits uniquely predicted variance in multiple EF domains, even after accounting for normative traits.

Conclusions:

  • Both normative and maladaptive personality traits are important for understanding self-reported executive functioning.
  • Assessing multiple domains of EF alongside both personality types offers a more comprehensive view.
  • Findings underscore the clinical utility of considering a broader spectrum of personality characteristics in relation to executive function.
