Nociception—the ability to feel pain—is essential for an organism’s survival and overall well-being. Noxious stimuli such as piercing pain from a sharp object, heat from an open flame, or contact with corrosive chemicals are first detected by sensory receptors, called nociceptors, located on nerve endings. Nociceptors express ion channels that convert noxious stimuli into electrical signals. When these signals reach the brain via sensory neurons, they are perceived as pain.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the link between coronavirus infection and chronic pain relapse.
  • To analyze the clinical presentation and outcomes of patients with prior chronic pain during the pandemic.

Main Methods:

  • Case series of 8 patients with a history of complete remission from chronic pain.
  • Evaluation of pain recurrence and response to conservative therapy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Screening and testing for COVID-19 in patients presenting with identical, refractory pain.

  • All 8 patients tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Patients experienced identical pain that did not respond to conservative treatments.
  • Two patients unfortunately died, while the remaining patients showed symptom improvement.
