Summary

Masking Level Difference (MLD) tests reveal that school performance does not significantly impact overall MLD results. However, children with poorer academic performance showed lower scores in specific antiphase conditions.

Background:

  • Masking Level Difference (MLD) assesses auditory processing by measuring signal detection thresholds based on interaural differences.
  • Previous research has explored MLD in various populations, but its correlation with academic performance in school-aged children requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze Masking Level Difference (MLD) test results in school-aged children with good academic performance.
  • To compare MLD test results between children with good and poor academic performance.

Main Methods:

  • Two studies were conducted with school-aged children meeting normal hearing criteria.
  • Study 1 included 47 children with good academic performance (GI).
  • Study 2 included 32 children with poor academic performance (GII), tested using a 500 Hz pure tone in binaural conditions (SoNo, SπNo) at 50 dBSL.

Main Results:

  • In Study 1, age and sex did not significantly correlate with MLD results (mean threshold 13.66 dB).
  • In Study 2, age and sex also did not influence performance.
  • A significant difference was found between groups in the SπNo condition, but not in SoNo or overall MLD thresholds.

Conclusions:

  • The MLD test cut-off for school-aged children was determined as 9.3 dB, unaffected by age or sex.
  • While overall MLD results did not differ based on academic performance, children with poorer performance (GII) exhibited deficits specifically in the SπNo condition compared to the high-performing group (GI).
