Summary

This study explored nurse practitioner (NP) roles in Australian clinical practice. Findings show NP practice patterns, including prescribing and ordering diagnostics, vary by clinical setting and care model.

Background:

Nurse practitioners (NPs) play a vital role in healthcare delivery.
Understanding NP work patterns and scopes of practice is crucial for optimizing healthcare services.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine how nurse practitioner (NP) roles are implemented in clinical practice within Victoria, Australia.
To report on NP work patterns and scopes of practice across diverse clinical settings and geographic locations.

Main Methods:

A quantitative survey design was employed.
An adapted data abstraction tool was used for an online survey distributed to all NPs in Victoria, Australia.
Descriptive statistics were analyzed using SPSS.

Main Results:

The study included mostly female participants (75%).
Nurse practitioners were found working in outpatient, community, and forensic care settings.
Practice patterns, such as prescribing and ordering diagnostics, were associated with the NP's clinical context and model of care.

Conclusions:

NP practice patterns are influenced by their work environment and the care model utilized.
This research provides insights into the diverse roles and practices of NPs in Australia.
