Summary

Nursing students performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with lower quality using a foot technique compared to the standard hand technique. However, the foot technique is a viable alternative when hand use is not possible.

Background:

  • Assessing alternative CPR techniques is essential for improving bystander intervention rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the quality and self-perception of CPR performed by nursing students using a foot technique versus the standard hand technique.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized simulation crossover study involved 65 nursing students.
  • Participants performed two-minute, compression-only CPR tests using both foot and hand techniques on a manikin.
  • Laerdal Resusci Anne QCPR® manikin and Wireless Skill Reporter® software were utilized.

Main Results:

  • CPR quality was significantly lower with the foot technique (72%) compared to the hand technique (91%) (p=0.006).
  • 95% of participants preferred the standard hand technique, but 92% would use the foot technique if necessary.

Conclusions:

  • While CPR quality is reduced with the foot technique, it remains a valuable alternative when hand CPR is not feasible.
  • Knowledge of the foot technique is advisable for individuals with CPR skills for use in specific emergency situations.
