Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Kinesiology

Background:

  • Aging is associated with declines in bioimpedance parameters and postural control.
  • These age-related changes increase the risk of falls in the elderly population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between bioimpedance measures and postural control in older adults.
  • To assess how functional performance relates to balance in the elderly.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated 21 elderly individuals (mean age ~76 years).
  • Measured standing balance using center of pressure movement in seven positions.
  • Assessed bioimpedance (resistance, reactance, phase angle) and functionality (Timed Up and Go Test, Short Physical Performance Battery).

Main Results:

  • Found inverse correlations between balance (mediolateral velocity) and bioimpedance variables (20-74% variance explained).
  • Significant inverse correlations observed between reactance/phase angle and one-legged balance (62-91% variance explained).
  • Semi-tandem stance showed positive correlation with Timed Up and Go and inverse correlation with bioimpedance parameters (21-67% variance explained).

Conclusions:

  • Postural control in the elderly is linearly associated with bioimpedance parameters and functional performance.
  • Balance assessment offers valuable insights for developing fall prevention and treatment strategies in older adults.
