Osteoclasts in Bone Remodeling01:31

Osteoclasts in Bone Remodeling

3.5K
Osteoclasts are cells responsible for bone resorption and remodeling. They originate from hematopoietic progenitor cells present in the bone marrow. Numerous progenitor cells fuse to form multinucleated cells, each with 10-20 nuclei. A single osteoclast has a diameter of 150 to 200 µM. These cells have ruffled borders that break down the underlying bone tissue and release minerals such as calcium into the blood in bone resorption. Osteoclasts cling to bones with their ruffled edges during...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Paget's disease (PD) is an intra-epidermal adenocarcinoma. Penoscrotal extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is rare and less associated with other cancers than mammary PD, but prostate cancer is a common comorbidity.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Paget's disease (PD) is an intra-epidermal adenocarcinoma.
  • Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) can present in various locations, with penoscrotal forms being less common than vulvar or perianal.
  • Penoscrotal EMPD is less frequently associated with secondary malignancies compared to mammary PD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the characteristics of penoscrotal extramammary Paget's disease.
  • To review associated neoplasms and treatment options for penoscrotal EMPD.

Main Methods:

  • Histopathological examination for diagnosis.
  • Clinical review of associated neoplasia.
  • Surgical and non-surgical treatment modalities.

Main Results:

  • Penoscrotal EMPD requires histopathological confirmation.
  • Associated cancers, though less frequent than in MPD, often involve neighboring organs like the prostate or cutaneous adnexal tumors.
  • Surgical excision is the primary treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Penoscrotal EMPD is a rare presentation of Paget's disease.
  • While less associated with systemic cancers, vigilance for prostate and adnexal tumors is warranted.
  • Surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment, with alternative therapies available.
