Upper eyelid blepharoplasty slightly alters intraocular lens power calculations, though not to a clinically significant degree. Corneal topography measurements using Galilei showed no significant changes after the procedure.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Corneal topography
- Refractive surgery
Background:
- Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a common cosmetic procedure.
- Changes in corneal topography can affect intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations.
- The impact of blepharoplasty on precise refractive outcomes requires investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effect of upper blepharoplasty on corneal topography.
- To assess the impact of upper blepharoplasty on intraocular lens power calculations.
- To compare measurements obtained from Galilei and IOLMaster devices.
Main Methods:
- Observational case series of 30 patients undergoing upper blepharoplasty.
- Corneal topography and IOL power calculations performed using Galilei and IOLMaster preoperatively and at 1 and 6 months postoperatively.
- Vectorial analysis and paired t-tests used for statistical evaluation.
Main Results:
- Blepharoplasty induced minor corneal astigmatism (0.39 D with Galilei, 0.31 D with IOLMaster) 6 months post-surgery.
- IOLMaster showed statistically significant increases in corneal curvature and astigmatism post-surgery.
- IOLMaster indicated a significant decrease in IOL power 6 months after surgery.
Conclusions:
- Upper eyelid blepharoplasty has a statistically significant but not clinically significant influence on IOL power calculations via IOLMaster.
- No significant corneal topographic changes were detected using the Galilei device following blepharoplasty.
