Balloon dilatation offers a successful, minimally invasive treatment for male urethral strictures, particularly when traditional methods fail. This technique provides atraumatic dilation up to 36F with minimal patient discomfort.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Minimally Invasive Surgery
Background:
- Urethral strictures, often post-inflammatory or post-traumatic, can cause significant voiding dysfunction.
- Conventional dilatation with metal sounds may yield unsatisfactory results for some patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy and safety of balloon dilatation for treating urethral strictures and vesical neck contractures.
- To present an alternative treatment option for patients with refractory urethral strictures.
Main Methods:
- Nine male patients with urethral strictures underwent balloon dilatation.
- A flexible endoscope facilitated guide wire passage.
- Fluoroscopic guidance ensured accurate balloon positioning and complete urethral dilatation.
Main Results:
- Successful balloon dilatation was achieved in all 9 patients.
- The procedure allowed for dilation up to 36F.
- The method was performed with minimal discomfort and was relatively atraumatic.
Conclusions:
- Balloon dilatation is an effective and safe treatment for male urethral strictures and vesical neck contractures.
- It is indicated for patients who have not responded well to conventional dilatation methods.
- This technique offers a minimally invasive approach with good patient tolerance.
