This study validates normal values for a new water-perfused high-resolution manometry (HRM) system. The findings demonstrate that this cost-effective HRM system effectively identifies esophageal motility disorders in clinical practice.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Esophageal Physiology
- Medical Device Technology
Background:
- High-resolution manometry (HRM) offers superior clinical insights compared to conventional methods but is often cost-prohibitive.
- Water-perfused HRM systems present a potential cost-reduction strategy, yet their reliability and interchangeability of reference values with solid-state systems require validation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To establish and validate normal reference values for a novel 24-sensor water-perfused high-resolution manometry system.
- To assess the system's ability to differentiate normal esophageal function from various motility disorders.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 225 individuals undergoing high-resolution manometry for clinical indications was studied.
- Participants were categorized into four groups: gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, systemic diseases with esophageal involvement, and dysphagia.
Main Results:
- In the gastroesophageal reflux disease group, 49% of pH-monitoring-positive individuals exhibited a hypotonic lower esophageal sphincter, compared to 28% of pH-negative individuals.
- Aperistalsis was universally observed in patients diagnosed with achalasia and systemic diseases affecting the esophagus.
- Only 14% of patients in the dysphagia group presented with normal high-resolution manometry findings.
Conclusions:
- The established normal values for the low-cost water-perfused HRM system are effective in discriminating common esophageal motility abnormalities encountered clinically.
- The system's unique design, featuring a peristaltic pump and helicoidal sensor distribution, contributes to its diagnostic utility.
