Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between baseline plasma copper levels and the risk of first stroke in a Chinese community-dwelling population.
  • To determine if plasma copper levels, even within the normal range, are associated with stroke risk.

Main Methods:

  • A nested case-control study was conducted using data from the 'H-type Hypertension and Stroke Prevention and Control Project'.
  • 1255 first stroke cases and 1255 matched controls were analyzed using conditional logistic regression.
  • Plasma copper levels were measured and analyzed in relation to stroke incidence.

Main Results:

  • The mean plasma copper level was 15.90 (2.66) μmol/L, with 94.26% of participants having levels within the normal range.
  • Each standard deviation increase in plasma copper was associated with a 17% increased risk of first stroke (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.07-1.28).
  • Higher quartiles of plasma copper were significantly associated with increased risk of total stroke (OR: 1.49) and ischemic stroke (OR: 1.46).

Conclusions:

  • Baseline plasma copper levels show a positive, approximately linear association with the risk of first ischemic stroke in the Chinese population.
  • This association persists even when copper levels are within the currently accepted normal range.
  • Further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore the underlying mechanisms.
