A new questionnaire, the Menopause Representations Questionnaire (MenoSentations-Q), was developed and validated for Portuguese women. This tool measures cognitive appraisal of menopause and can inform interventions.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Women's Health
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Menopause is a significant life transition with varying cognitive appraisals.
- Previous qualitative research informed the development of a new assessment tool.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a Portuguese version of the Menopause Representations Questionnaire (MenoSentations-Q).
- To assess cognitive appraisal of menopause using the Self-Regulation Model framework.
Main Methods:
- A total of 309 Portuguese women (aged 45-65) completed the MenoSentations-Q.
- Psychometric properties including factorial, convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity, alongside reliability and sensitivity, were evaluated.
Main Results:
- The MenoSentations-Q demonstrated acceptable factorial, convergent, and discriminant validity.
- Good sensitivity and reliability were found for the four factors: identity, positive consequences, negative consequences, and control/awareness/cause.
- Criterion validity was confirmed for two factors.
Conclusions:
- The MenoSentations-Q is a brief, validated measure for assessing menopausal representations in Portuguese women.
- This instrument can inform interventions aimed at challenging unhelpful menopause beliefs in clinical and community settings.

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH...
