Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association of cancer procoagulant (CP) with leukemic cells in acute nonlymphoid leukemia (ANLL).
  • To differentiate CP from TF in leukemic cell procoagulant activity.

Main Methods:

  • Assayed procoagulant activity of blast cell extracts from 26 ANLL patients.
  • Utilized criteria distinguishing CP from TF: factor VII independence and inhibitor sensitivity.
  • Employed immunodiffusion with anti-CP antibodies for confirmation.

  • Procoagulant activity was detected in most ANLL samples, significantly higher in the M3 subtype.
  • Nineteen samples (M1, M2, M3, M4) met criteria for CP, while M5 samples did not.

Conclusions:

  • This study provides the first evidence of cancer procoagulant (CP) associated with leukemic cells.

  • The findings suggest CP may play a role in the hemostatic abnormalities observed in ANLL.
