Summary

Mandatory mumps vaccination in Poland has significantly reduced cases. Despite a slight dip in 2018 vaccination coverage, continued high immunization rates are expected to further decrease mumps incidence.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health
  • Immunization Practices

Background:

  • Mumps vaccination, using the MMR vaccine (mumps, measles, and rubella), has been mandatory in Poland since 2003 with a two-dose schedule.
  • While vaccination has led to a decade-long decline in mumps incidence, the disease remains prevalent among children.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the epidemiological status of mumps in Poland during 2018.
  • To assess mumps vaccination coverage within the Polish population and compare it with previous years.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive analysis was conducted using data from Poland's mandatory surveillance system.
  • Data were sourced from the "Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2018" and "Vaccinations in Poland in 2018" annual bulletins.

Main Results:

  • In 2018, Poland registered 1,585 mumps cases, with an incidence of 4.1 per 100,000 population, a decrease from 2017.
  • The highest incidence was observed in 5-year-old children (39.2 per 100,000), with higher rates in men (5.0) than women (3.4).
  • Mumps vaccination coverage for 3-year-olds in 2018 was 92.9%, a 1.1% decrease compared to 2017.

Conclusions:

  • Consistent implementation of the National Immunisation Programme for mumps has resulted in a substantial reduction in reported cases.
  • High vaccination coverage is anticipated to lead to a continued decrease in mumps cases in the future.
