Insights
Genetic links between cystic kidney disease, gastrointestinal issues like midgut malrotation, and heart defects are suggested by a case study. This highlights potential shared genetic origins for these congenital anomalies.
Area of Science:
- Medical Genetics
- Developmental Biology
- Clinical Medicine
Background:
- Adult polycystic kidney disease (APKD) is a common inherited disorder.
- Midgut malrotation is a congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Congenital heart disease (CHD) encompasses a range of structural defects present at birth.
Abstract:
A case of malrotation of the midgut and adult polycystic kidney disease is reported. The patient had a stillborn son who had congenital heart disease and adult type of polycystic kidney disease. These findings support the notion that cystic disease of the kidney, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular anomalies are genetically linked.
